Junior MLT vs MLT vs Lab Technician: AIIMS CRE-5
Scope: This article explains the original CRE-5 notification dated 13 June 2026. Its application window has closed. Vacancy counts, eligibility and exam arrangements below describe that notification; later official notices may amend them.
Junior Medical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technologist and Lab Technician appear in the same CRE-5 group, but they are separate posts. Their titles should not be used interchangeably when comparing eligibility or pay.
The original notification is useful for comparing the advertised requirements. It does not establish a complete day-to-day job description or an automatic promotion route between these titles.
Main posts compared
| Post | Original qualification route, summarised | Pay level | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior MLT at the listed AIIMS/CAPFIMS entries | Specified 10+2 science plus two-year regular DMLT and one year of the specified experience; or the stated 10+2 science plus MLT degree route | 5 | 57–60 |
| Junior MLT at VMMC & Safdarjung | Its own 10+2 science, recognised DMLT and one-year experience wording | 5 | 59 |
| Lab Technician at AIIMS Bathinda, Deoghar and Nagpur | 10+2 science and DMLT essential; B.Sc. MLT desirable | 5 | 60 |
| Laboratory Technician at CNCI | Degree/DMLT combinations and two years of certified experience under the entry's specific conditions | 5 | 60–61 |
| MLT at AIIMS New Delhi and CAPFIMS | MLT/Medical Laboratory Science degree and two years of specified relevant experience | 6 | 61 |
The title alone does not tell you the requirement
In this notification, Junior MLT and the listed Lab Technician posts carry Level 5, while MLT carries Level 6. That does not make their qualifications equivalent. Some Junior MLT entries expressly offer a degree route, whereas the three AIIMS Lab Technician rows require the diploma and describe B.Sc. MLT as desirable. [pp. 57–61]
The CNCI Laboratory Technician entry also has different requirements from the AIIMS Lab Technician entries. Always compare the institute as well as the title. [pp. 60–61]
Other Group 17 roles
| Other post family | Pay level in the original advertisement |
|---|---|
| Lab Attendant Grade II and RHTC Laboratory Attendant | 2 |
| Technician (Urodynamic Studies) | 4 |
| Technical Assistant/Technician and the listed Laboratory Technician entries at Level 6 | 6 |
| Technical Officer (Technical Supervisor), AIIMS Bhopal | 7 |
These entries also have their own qualification and experience rules. “Technician (Laboratory)” at Level 6 should not be confused with the three “Lab Technician” entries at Level 5. [pp. 60–62]
A pay level is not a take-home salary figure
The notification lists pay levels and mentions allowances under the respective institution's rules. It does not provide enough information to calculate each candidate's monthly take-home pay. Avoid presenting an estimated salary as a figure confirmed by this PDF. [p. 4, pp. 57–62]
For a useful personal comparison, record four items together: post, institute, qualification route and experience requirement. Then add the pay level and original vacancy total. The vacancy table and eligibility guide provide those starting points.
